Commercial Signage
CAG believes that the residents and businesses in Georgetown share a common interest in maintaining the historic character of the neighborhood both from the perspective of the quality of life, and because Georgetown’s special character and international reputation draw customers to its businesses. Part of the appeal is tasteful and appropriate signage in the commercial areas.
Current regulations contain detailed guidance on what is an appropriate sign. All signs must be permitted and reviewed by the Old Georgetown Board.
The primary categories of problematic signage are:
- Billboard signs (i.e. the sign covers the whole storefront)
- Sandwich boards on the sidewalk
- Signs attached to public property
- Neon lights within 18" of the window
- Other unpermitted unattractive signs
CAG welcomes assistance from neighbors. Please notify the Historic Preservation Review Board for enforcement of signs that appear inappropriate in our Historic District –www.preservation.dc.gov.
