2013 Calendar For Board & Membership Meetings

Upcoming Meetings
May 28 Board Meeting, 6:00pm; CAG Office
May 29
Featuring: Mayor Gray and Councilmember Jack Evans will be the featured speakers at CAG’s annual awards and elections meeting. They will present CAG’s prestigious awards to outstanding community leaders. Councilmember for Ward 2 since 1991, Jack serves as chair of the Council’s Committee on Finance and Revenue, which oversees the District’s finances, including tax policy. In addition to earning a reputation as one of DC’s toughest budget and tax stewards, Jack has used this committee to secure approval of many major legislative tax reforms including: reducing tax rates, simplifying DC’s antiquated tax code and establishing incentives for businesses.

Annual Awards: The prestigious Belin Award will be presented to Karen Cruse for her expert and dedicated work in preserving the historic character of Georgetown. Leslie Buhler, Director of Tudor Place, will be honored with the William A. Cochran Award for “exceptional efforts to protect and enhance the community’s parkland and architectural resources.”

The Charles Atherton Award will be presented to Dana Nerenberg, Principal of Hyde Elementary School, for “exceptional service by a dedicated public-sector professional for outstanding work preserving and protecting historic Georgetown.”

The Martin-Davidson Award to the business persons who have contributed significantly to the community will be presented to Clyde’s Restaurant Group’s Ginger and John Laytham.

And there will be a special appreciation award presented to Ray Danieli for dedicated and distinguished Service to the Georgetown community.

Election of CAG officers and four directors will also take place at the May 29 meeting – which is our organization’s annual meeting. The slate is Pamla Moore, President; Bob vom Eigen, Vice President; Barbara Downs, Secretary; Bob Laycock, Treasurer; and Directors: Diane Colasanto, Karen Cruse, Hazel Denton, and Luca Pivato. Current President Jennifer Altemus will remain on the board as Immediate Past President. Treasurer Bob Laycock will report on the financial condition of CAG Please join CAG to hear from the Mayor Gray and Jack Evans and to honor the members of our community who have made Georgetown a better place.

Featuring: Georgetown University will host CAG to view their state of the art new science building. The evening will start with a reception in the grand old salon, the Copley Formal Lounge in the Copley Building just off Healy Circle, where we will hear from Ali Whitmer, a key leader in the development of Regents Hall. From there groups will venture out to tour Regents Hall — GU’s new, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, state-ofthe- art science building.

The 4th annual Georgetown ARTS show will showcase talents of Georgetown’s artists at House of Sweden, February 7 – 10. The opening reception is Thursday evening, February 7 from 6 until 9pm at House of Sweden, 2900 K Street NW. Following Thursday’s opening reception, the show will be open Friday, February 8 through Sunday, February 10 from 11am to 5pm. The show is open to the public. Read more >>

Featuring: Understanding and Helping the Homeless in Georgetown Have you ever wanted to know the back story behind a particular homeless person? Have you wondered why there are people living on the streets in our prosperous community? Do you ask yourself if it “helps” to give money to these individuals? The CAG meeting on Thursday September 27 will feature a panel of experts who will give insight – and some answers—to these difficult questions. Come early to the CAG meeting and enjoy Music on the Lawn, a free performance taking place every Thursday evening in September from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. On September 27th, writer and performer Holly Bass and her Jazz band will be playing. Her pieces have been presented at the Kennedy Center, Arena Stage, and the Whitney Museum.

Featuring: Carl Colby who will tell the fascinating back stories behind the film he made about his father, Georgetown resident and former Director of the CIA, William E. Colby: The Man Nobody Knew: In Search of My Father, CIA Spymaster William Colby. He recently produced and directed this featurelength documentary film on his late father, William E. Colby, former Director of the CIA, as well as the evolution of the CIA from OSS in WWII to today. The story is a probing history of the CIA as well as a personal memoir of a family living in clandestine shadows.
Time: Weather permitting, the 7:00 reception will be on the lovely Book Hill terrace; and at 7:30 we will move to the main meeting room to enjoy the talk by Carl Colby

Featuring: Expert consultant Debbie Weil who will talk about the computer and phone uses that are changing all our lives. She will explain and demonstrate what a blog is and does, how you can use your computer to access the best local information, how you can “talk” with your neighbors on CAG’s electronic bulletin board. She will be talking about how individual Georgetowners can access and benefit from the confusing – but incredibly convenient and comprehensive – world of social media. There will be Q+A as well.

Debbie is a former journalist with an MBA degree from Georgetown University, a Masters in Journalism from the University of Wisconsin and is a graduate of Harvard with a degree in English. She lives with husband, doctor Sam Harrington, on O Street.

Featuring: The third annual CAG art show opens with a reception on Thursday evening February 16 from 6 to 9pm at the House of Sweden at 2900 K Street NW. CAG Presents Georgetown ARTS, sponsored by CAG and the House of Sweden, along with several generous patrons, will showcase talents of Georgetown’s many artists – “emerging” to established, young to old, working in classes, studios, and plein air.

Following Thursday evening’s opening reception, Georgetown ARTS 2012 will be open daily Friday, February 17, through Monday, February 20, from 11am to 5pm, featuring works by Georgetown residents — and artists who have studios in Georgetown. Artists Edward “Bear” Miller, Camilla Bozzoli and Robin Hill will offer demonstrations of portraiture, watercolor and oil painting during the course of the show. Art work on view will include oil, acrylic and watercolor painting, prints, sculpture, photography, and mixed media. Most works will be available for sale, with a few on loan from the artists and private collections. All art on display will be suitable for viewing by families with young children.

Featuring: A panel of experts on historic preservation outlining the dos, don’ts, and whys regarding remodeling homes in Georgetown. The experienced specialists on the panel include Anne Lewis of the Old Georgetown Board (OGB); Tim Dennee of the Historic Preservation Review Board; Jeff Jones, ANC2E Commissioner; Pamla Moore, chair of CAG’s Historic Preservation Committee; and architect Outerbridge Horsey. Following remarks by each panelist regarding their role and area of expertise, the panel will field questions — which should lead to an interesting exchange on many of the technicalities, philosophies, logistics and issues concerning home renovation in “Old Georgetown.”
